Cheerful Touch Services

Cancer patients can receive massage from local therapists in the comfort of their home or at a salon as a gift from Cheerful Heart.  Massages can include head, neck, back, legs or feet, any part of the body that the patient finds relaxing.

Cheerful Touch was created by Cheerful Heart in 2012 when cancer survivor and thriver, Renee Bassett, began helping cancer patients with hair loss and skin problems. Renee and two other cosmetologists also offer services in their businesses or will travel to a patient’s home.

Patients, with approval of their doctors, can be scheduled for a massage by calling the Cheerful Heart message line at 883-3070 or talking with a volunteer at the Oncology Clinic on Tuesdays.

The benefits of physical touch can be measured. Studies have shown that physical touch can lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. The relaxation achieved with these physical changes can improve the patient’s state of mind and quality of life.

Several reviews of the scientific literature have attributed numerous positive effects to massage, including improvements in the quality of patients' relaxation, sleep, and immune system responses and in the relief of their fatigue, pain, anxiety, and nausea. On the basis of these reviews, some large cancer centers in the United States have started to integrate massage therapy into conventional settings. (National Center for Biotechnology Information)
